and Rita.Hurricane Assistance
- Now more than ever, traditional donations to United Way are needed so that
all of our agencies will have the resources they need to help hurricane
evacuees, while continuing to provide services to citizens of Pulaski County.
- United Way's Emergency Food and Shelter Program has provided
Catholic Charities of Arkansas with $67,000 to assist evacuees. United Way
has also used funds from the City of North Little Rock and private donors to
provide evacuees with $25,000 in gas vouchers, bus tickets, and prescription
medications.
- United Way’s strong, year-round support of local disaster relief
organizations such as the the
Red Cross,
Salvation Army, and
Arkansas Foodbank Network,
helps enable these organizations to immediately mobilize when disaster
strikes.
- Payroll giving make it easy to donate. Giving just a few dollars
per paycheck adds up to a significant donation over the course of the year.
This disaster is going to take many months of recovery.
- Local United Way agencies that aren't usually involved in disaster relief,
such as Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock, St. Francis House, the Boy Scouts and
Camp Aldersgate, are providing
shelter and support services for evacuees. Agencies such as
Goodwill Industries of Arkansas and
Our House will begin working with
evacuees once they leave temporary shelters.
- In the months to come, most of Central Arkansas’s health and human
service agencies will expend resources helping the thousands of people
displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. While many evacuees have left
Arkansas, others plan to stay here permanently. These evacuees will need jobs,
schools, services for their children, health care, and permanent housing.
- Unless otherwise designated by the donor, gifts made to Heart of
Arkansas United Way stay here in Central Arkansas. Donations to national disaster
relief organizations will not necessarily come back to Arkansas.
- Heart of Arkansas United Way has started the Hurricane Evacuee Assistance
Fund to help evacuees in Arkansas. United Way is partnering with Catholic
Charities of Arkansas, which has decades of experience helping refugees. You
may write in Hurricane Evacuee Assistance Fund on your pledge card.
- United Way can forward disaster recovery contributions to the community of
your choice. Send a check, along with a note clearly stating the community or
zip code you would like to receive your contribution.
- Donors may also make an electronic gift for Hurricane Katrina recovery
through United Way of America’s website at
